Before the start of this season, we created a new metric for batters called Hard Contact Index (HCtX), a measure multiplying how often a batter made contact (ct%) with how often the batter made hard contact, according to Baseball Info Solutions (BIS) data.
When we first looked at the data, using several years’ worth, it turned out the HCtX was an excellent indicator of good hitters, with batters like Ryan Braun and Joey Votto at the top, and Chris Getz at the bottom.
By looking at current HCtX results, we might be able to spot batters whose skill at hitting the ball often and hard is (or isn’t) translating to production results in scoring categories.
