BATTING: Embracing volatility

With eight weeks to go, many leagues’ trade deadlines loom. Teams jockeying for a run to the wire are considering how to improve their teams.

If improving batting is a key to your success in the stretch, one of the most important factors will be batter consistency.

If you’re in or near the lead and making a deal to hold your position, you can’t afford to acquire a batter who might well hang some brutal weeks on you as you battle for position.

Conversely, if you’re trying to make up ground by “catching lightning in a bottle,” you might want to target an inconsistent batter who has had some huge weeks, because you hope you’ll get a few of those in what is, statistically, a very short run to the wire.
