MINORS: The role of minor league age on major league outcomes

It’s common knowledge that advanced performance at a young age is a significant indicator of future success. As with just about any other skill, this certainly applies to playing baseball. It doesn’t take much scouting expertise to understand the importance of making an MLB opening day roster younger than most college players get drafted or playing in Double-A younger than most high school players graduate. 

It’s easy to understand the importance of age in these circumstances, but what about the more borderline cases? Is there reason to be suspicious of a 23-year-old slashing .300/.400/.500 at Double-A?
