MINORS: The Eyes Have It—David Peterson, Anthony Kay, and Jeff Diehl

The Mets selected prep OF Jarred Kelenic with the 6th pick in Monday’s amateur draft. Choosing a prep position prospect with the first pick is a departure from New York’s recent draft history. Their last three first round picks, RHP Justin Dunn (19th overall, 2016), LHP Anthony Kay (31st, 2016), and LHP David Peterson (20th overall, 2017), were all college pitchers. Their 2014 selection was college OF Michael Conforto (10th overall, 2014). We must go back to 2013, when the Mets drafted 1B Dominic Smith, to find the last prep player drafted in the first round.
