MINORS: 2012 Top Second Base Prospects

This week we continue our annual review of the top prospects in baseball by position, focusing on second base.  For the past two weeks we have been lamenting the lack of positional depth at C and 1B, and that theme continues this week as 2B is historically the thinnest position in the minors. 

Typically the best 2B are failed SS prospects who lack the range or arm strength to handle the more demanding position or are blocked at the major league level. A look at the top 2B currently in the majors illustrates this reality—Ian Kinsler, Robinson Canó, Dustin Pedroia, Brandon Phillips, Danny Espinosa, and Ben Zobrist all saw action at SS to begin their careers.  Dustin Ackley and Jason Kipnis both played CF while in college.
