RESEARCH: Using strikeouts minus walks to find buying opportunities

It’s the middle of summer, and your rotation is limping along.  You could really use an arm or two to get you through until your ace returns.  You scan the waiver wire for pitching help, but what you can find is best described as “meh.” Some washed up guys limping along and providing nothing more than volume. B-level prospects on bad teams; and injured players with long timetables.  Desperate, you filter to look at the last month’s stats and voila! There are some decent performances—surely too small a sample to learn anything from—but you can’t help but hope.  Can we trust those last 30 days?

In this study, we will turn to strikeout rate minus walk rate (k-bb%) to answer this question.
