In our last edition, we tested the proposition that starting pitchers would suffer performance declines in the seasons after they’d endured long playoff runs that included starts in the World Series (WS).
The idea was that pitchers with added playoff innings, as many as 50, would be prone to workload issues. And a full month less recovery time wouldn't help.
We looked at pitchers with at least 30 regular-season starts leading into their WS seasons. We first examined outcomes, focusing on aggregated results in Games Started, IP, ERA and WHIP.
In this regard, we saw no difference between WS starting pitchers and their non-WS peers. Nor were there any significant differences when we looked at individual pitcher performances as percentages...
