In late September, as the playoffs were eliminating teams from World Series contention, a poster in the always excellent BaseballHQ.com Subscriber Forums raised an interesting idea.
In a thread he titled “Breathing Easier,” poster “alkaline” (we think this is a reference to the famed Tigers Hall of Famer, not to a Duracell or a PH level above 7.0) said, “Admit it—how many of you breathe easier when the team with your pitchers on it goes down to defeat in the playoffs—this means fewer IP for your pitchers and makes them less likely to be a burnout candidate for next year.”
