Does pitch velocity really matter?
This question has lately been the subject of a lot of interesting discussion behind the scenes here at BaseballHQ.com, as we work to figure out how best to manage the current torrent of on-field baseball data (not to mention the massive flood that’s on the way).
Our goal is the same as it was when we were limited to the basics, walks and strikeouts and base hits. We want to remain out front in delivering the best possible stats and analysis to the BHQ community.
Part of that responsibility includes addressing assumptions. One such assumption, fostered in large part by the broadcaster culture of reporting the radar reading of every pitch, is that velocity somehow matters to outcomes.
