The great Colorado Rockies’ pitching experiment was over almost before it began—and definitely before they gave it a chance to work.
But BaseballHQ.com research indicates the Rockies might not have had the right pitchers to make best use of the idea. A smart GM, in “real” baseball or fantasy, could build a winning rotation by adopting this strategy.
Last June, the Rockies announced they were changing from a standard five-man rotation to a four-man system, with starters on strict 75-pitch limits.
The idea was connected to research that teams should avoid having a starter pitch to opponents a third time in a game, because batters do better in their third whack at a pitcher than in the first two, as we saw in 2012:
