The Big Hurt

On the surface, the National League appeared to have lost a tremendous amount of offense with Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols moving over to the American League. Are there injury risks in the NL outfield pool that will make it even tougher to find top-notch offensive power?

A quick glance at the American League outfield includes a couple of marquee names in the news this spring: Carl Crawford of the Red Sox and Josh Hamilton of the Rangers. Does that mean the American League is made up of major offensive players with lots of risk this draft day? Let’s find out.

While there aren’t any major injury situations, injuries to veterans like Youkilis, Rolen, Polanco, Alex Rodriguez and Chipper Jones signals that this group is aging and fast.

[FREE] Unlike their keystone counterparts, the shortstop group has more than their share of injury situations. You have top of the chart types in Reyes, Ramirez and Tulowitzki, a veteran like Furcal and up-and-comer Drew who had a gruesome ankle injury last season. Tread carefully with this group.

In a lot of ways baseball is a game of cycles, including injuries. Right now we are dealing with few familiar names dealing with injury situations at second base. There have been years where this position has been deluged with injuries but not this year. Enjoy the “down cycle” while it lasts.

Sometimes first impressions can lead us down the wrong road. Take the first base talent pool for example. With the latest news that Ryan Howard had suffered a setback in his rehab from Achilles tendon surgery last fall, it seems that at least in the NL with the departures of Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder, that first base was going to be void of major power hitters. But it's not like fantasy owners in NL-only leagues are going to be scrambling for power.

When you buy a home, you go through a checklist of items including price, affordability, location, the condition of the house and what repairs need to be done. You do your do diligence. Preparing for fantasy drafts should be similar in two respects. First, preparation should be as thorough in regards to having a checklist. Second, you should cover all areas, including the negative aspects of the players health.
