Anthony Varvaro (RHP, ATL)
The Braves optioned Cory Gearrin to the minors and recalled the 27-year-old from Triple-A to replace him. Varvaro has 28 big league innings under his belt in ’10 and ’11 with the Mariners—his original organization—and Atlanta. He was drafted and developed as a starter before being converted to the bullpen in ’09. He has significant arm strength and regularly pumps fastballs into the 90-95 mph range. Hitters have a tough time making hard contact against the combination of his fastball and hard curveball, which serves as his strikeout pitch.
