I've got a funny relationship with "notes" or "brain flakes" types of articles. There's a long history of them in sports media, of course, from Mike Lupica's "Shooting from the Lip" to Peter King's "Things I Think I Think".
I tried my hand at this style a bit in my college newspaper days. My predecessor had written a hilarious/biting notes-style column for a couple of years, and when he graduated I inherited his space. It took all of one submission for me (and the rest of campus) to realize that I'm neither as talented nor as funny as Bill Simmons. I quickly took the notes-style column out of my playbook.
But as I'm staring down my 25th college reunion in a couple of weeks, maybe—just maybe—enough time has passed that it's safe to dust...
