Logan Verrett’s (RHP, NYM) spot in the starting rotation is in jeopardy. The 26-year-old’s next turn is slated for August 12, but manager Terry Collins has not yet committed to giving Verrett another start. Given Verrett’s 5.49 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 5.8 Dom and 4.6 Ctl in 57.1 IP as a starter this year, it’s easy to see why Collins is pondering a change.
If Collins opts to replace Verrett, Jon Niese (LHP, NYM) and Robert Gsellman (RHP, NYM) would appear to be the leading candidates to get the nod. Niese has pitched decently in two relief outings since rejoining the Mets via trade on August 1, but he owns a 4.80 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 114 IP overall this season.
