PT TOMORROW: NL East—Niese hits DL again

Just days before Dillon Gee (RHP, NYM) was set to be reinstated from the disabled list, Jon Niese (LHP, NYM) hit the DL with a left shoulder strain. Jacob deGrom (RHP, NYM) and Daisuke Matsuzaka (RHP, NYM) had been battling to stay in the starting rotation, but both will now get to stay a bit longer.

Gee took Niese’s spot in the starting five on July 9. Niese, meanwhile, hopes to only miss one start. Given Niese’s injury history over the past year or so, one wonders if he may wind up missing a little more time than expected. But the team expects him back on July 14.

At that time, a decision will be made as to who sticks in the rotation between deGrom and Matsuzaka. We still think deGrom will be the choice. The 26-year-old...
