The chief competitors were slated to be Dan Straily (RHP, MIA), Jeff Locke (LHP, MIA), José Ureña (RHP, MIA), and Justin Nicolino (LHP, MIA). Manager Don Mattingly hasn’t yet named a winner in the battle, but Straily remains the heavy favorite.
Locke seemed a longshot to make the rotation, and now it has been announced that he will open the season on the disabled list with left biceps tendinitis. He’ll likely pitch out of the bullpen once he’s healthy.
