PT TOMORROW: AL East — Saves in BAL pen? There are no Givens

New Orioles manager Brandon Hyde has said that he “won’t manage to the save stat,” which is something less than the reassurance owners of Mychal Givens (RHP, BAL) were likely hoping to get heading into the 2019 season. On a team that won 47 games last year and did not bring in much in the way of immediate help, saves figured to be in short supply to begin with, and now Hyde’s statement hints that whatever ninth-inning opportunities there are may be shared with others on the staff.

As indicated in the Baseball Forecaster, Givens was a shaky bet to be able to hang on to a closure role, given an escalating xERA that went north of 4.00 last year and a walk rate that could spike as well, given his FpK.
