While the role of Mike Tauchman (OF, SF) had essentially been limited to serving as a pinch runner until he was liberated from New York, some team observers were still mildly surprised that the Yankees would deplete their outfield depth by way of in-season trade, given the notorious, persistent health issues of players like Aaron Judge (OF, NYY), Giancarlo Stanton (DH, NYY) and Aaron Hicks (OF, NYY).

In addition, neither Clint Frazier (OF, NYY) nor Brett Gardner (OF, NYY) had seized control of the left field job. Through May 6, both were sitting with batting averages below the Mendoza line and negative BPV.
