The Washington Nationals' slim playoff hopes have faded recently and this trade deadline saw them behave accordingly, moving relievers Hunter Harvey and Dylan Floro, and outfielders Lane Thomas and Jesse Winker

Sitting nine games out of the wild card as August begins probably moves the Nationals firmly into “wait for next year” territory. But that's often a perfect recipe for up and coming players to make their case for a starting job next season. Moving on from bats like Thomas and Winker in particular moves a bunch of interesting names up in the batting order.
