Update: The competition for the fifth starter job has been narrowed to four candidates: Wade LeBlanc (LHP, MIA), Kevin Slowey (RHP, MIA), Tom Koehler (RHP, MIA) and John Maine (RHP, MIA). LeBlanc entered spring training as the favorite and while he has done nothing to disappoint, Slowey has also impressed.
LeBlanc has breezed through his first 9 IP without allowing a run while striking out six and walking none. He owned a 4.70 xERA and 5.6 Dom in 69 IP with the Marlins last year.
Slowey has struck out 13 and allowed 4 ER through his first 13.2 IP this spring. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2011, but he could be on the verge of locking down another opportunity.
