DIVISIONAL OUTLOOK: NL East—Is B.J. Upton now a platoon player?

To say B.J. Upton (OF, ATL) has had a disappointing season would be an understatement. He finally started showing signs of snapping out of his funk in June (70% ct%, .267 xBA, 4 HR and 4 SB in 84 AB), but has since gone back into a severe tailspin. As we near the end of August, Upton has posted a non-negative BPV in just one month (62 BPV in June) an xBA over .200 just twice (.201 xBA in April and .267 xBA in June) and double figures in either R or RBI just once (11 RBI in June).

As a result, Jordan Schafer (OF, ATL) has seen increased playing time, a possibility we mentioned in May. Though he has shied away from calling it a strict platoon, manager Fredi Gonzalez has penciled Schafer’s name into the lineup in place of...
