DIVISIONAL OUTLOOK: AL East—Wells to the rescue?

The Yankees' spate of spring injuries has led them to acquire one of the poster children for current bad MLB contracts, Vernon Wells (OF, NYY). While Angels owner Arte Moreno has agreed to retain the bulk of the financial burden, the questions is whether Wells will be a drag on the Yankees battered lineup, as his BA has been below .229 the past two seasons.

Those low BAs, however, were partially fueled part by low H% (22% in 2011, 23% in 2012). Wells' xBA (.250 in 2011, .253 in 2012) said it should not have been that bad. Another glimmer of hope, perhaps, is that some of Wells' power shortcomings in 2012 could be attributed to a torn thumb ligament, which caused him to miss several weeks. Wells looked healthy in Angels...
