DIVISIONAL OUTLOOK: AL East—Hughes (and owners) sing the blues

The Yankees were reportedly toying with the idea of removing Phil Hughes (RHP, NYY) from their starting rotation before deciding just to bump him to September 2 to give him a bit of extra rest. In that start, Hughes will be looking for his first win in exactly two months, though his performance over that period hasn’t been all bad: three PQS-DOM, but also posted five PQS-0s.

Hughes continues to struggle with the long ball (1.5 hr/9, 12% hr/f), which undercuts acceptable Dom and Cmd. It’s been long assumed that Hughes and the Yankees would part company in 2014, and he would be well-served by finding a new home park that is a bit less HR happy: In 2013, Hughes has a 5.79 ERA at Yankee Stadium and a 3.84 ERA away from it....
