AL East: Wells looks to maintain increased role

New York Yankees

Before Jose Trevino suffered a quad strain on July 12, New York had used an even playing time split at catcher, with Trevino and Austin Wells each starting 48 of New York’s first 96 games. Since Trevino landed on the IL, though, Wells has seized a significantly larger portion of the playing time, starting 19 of New York’s 23 games. In that time, Wells has emerged as a strong offensive force for New York, hitting .324/.419./.521 in 87 PA while spending most of his time as New York’s cleanup hitter. Following this torrid stretch, Wells’ season line now stands at an impressive .251/.346/.416 in 273 PA, while his 2.7 fWAR ranks fifth among all catchers.
