Dodgers | Hyun-Jin Ryu likely done for season
Los Angeles Dodgers SP Hyun-Jin Ryu (shoulder) elected to have surgery on his pitching shoulder, Tuesday, May 19, according to a source. Ryu may not be able to throw for the Dodgers again this season.  Source: ESPNLosAngeles.com - Mark Saxon

BHQ take: The most definitive report by a club source came just before game time on Tuesday night, May 19. Ryu had gotten pretty much nowhere in his rehab efforts and it looks like a lost year for him. The Dodgers will likely double-up on their efforts to acquire veteran starting pitching help on the FA and trade markets. We'll have more PT% analysis, likely another PT% chop for Ryu, and other input as the smoke clears over the next few days. But certainly right now—and particularly with three decent starts under his belt—Mike Bolsinger is looking like a big winner here.  —Jock Thompson

Impact: High
Bolsinger, Michael    PT Gain: 2%
Ryu, Hyun-Jin    PT Loss: -2%

Brewers | Scooter Gennett sent down
Milwaukee Brewers 2B Scooter Gennett was optioned to Class AAA-Colorado Springs (Colo.) Monday, May 18.  Source: MLB.com

BHQ take: While Hector Gomez is currently playing 2B in Gennett's absence, the larger long-term threat to Gennett re-establishing himself here is switch-hitter Luis Sardiñas. Recent call-up Sardinas is currently starting at SS while Jean Segura is on the DL with a finger fracture. He could switch to 2B upon Segura's return. While a bit surprising Gennett was afforded only 65 AB to demonstrate he could sustain the solid skills and stats he displayed in 2014, his near-total skills collapse in that small sample did not help his case. He showed no power and struggled to make contact, a real problem for a player whose primary asset was his contact ability. LHB Gennett was stuck in platoon mode, going 0-for-11 vs. LHP after going 4-for-39 vs. LHP in 2014. Gomez has been his primary platoon partner. While Gomez's minor-league career and MLEs suggest he is likely to return to a reserve role, his 2014 MLE PX suggests he could sustain moderate power. Sardinas was obtained in a pre-season trade with TEX, where he saw 115 AB in 2014. He flashed above-average speed and virtually no power, though he is only 22 years old and could eventually develop enough pop to be a middle-infield asset.   —Tom Kephart

Impact: High
Sardinas, Luis PT Gain: 30%
Gennett, Scooter PT Loss: -25%
Segura, Jean PT Loss: -20%
Gomez, Hector PT Gain: 15%

Marlins | Jarred Cosart to DL
Miami Marlins SP Jarred Cosart (head) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, May 18, due to vertigo. The move was made retroactive to May 14. SP Tom Koehler will start Tuesday, May 19, against the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Source: MLB.com - Christina De Nicola

BHQ take: Jarred Cosart's vertigo means that both Tom Koehler and David Phelps will stay in Miami's rotation at least until either Cosart or Jose Fernandez is ready. Cosart has been nothing but inconsistent. Over his last five starts, he's registered every PQS score but 2. His xERA is 4.01, and that comes with a poor Dom of 5.4 and a poor Ctl of 3.2 for a poor Cmd of 1.7. All of those numbers are fairly consistent with Cosart's career numbers. It was Koehler, not Phelps as we had speculated, who lost his rotation slot when Henderson Alvarez returned on Sunday. Now Koehler will be in the rotation a while longer. Koehler has a 2.68 ERA, but that's not well supported by his skills to date. His xERA is 4.06, although his Dom of 6.6 and his Cmd of 2.5 are better than Cosart's numbers. How this will all shake out is very murky, given we don't know when either Cosart or Fernandez will be ready and given Miami has a new manager.  —Phil Hertz

Impact: Med
Cosart, Jarred    PT Loss: -2%
Koehler, Tom
Phelps, David    PT Gain: 2%

Padres | Wil Myers lands on DL
San Diego Padres OF Wil Myers (wrist) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, May 19, with left wrist tendinitis. The DL move is retroactive to May 11. RP Cory Mazzoni was recalled from Class AAA-El Paso (Texas) in a corresponding move.  Source: MLB.com

BHQ take: Jedd Gyorko's immediate playing time prospects get new life, as Yangervis Solarte has taken the last five 1B starts with both Myers and Yonder Alonso out. We don't know how long Myers will be gone, but we'll err on the side of caution here. Given the positional versatility of both Solarte and Cory Spangenberg, the availability of first basemen Tommy Medica and Jake Goebbert in the minors, and with Will Middlebrooks still in the mix at 3B, the SD infield remains a fluid situation that will depend on matchups and who is producing from game to game.  —Jock Thompson

Impact: High
Solarte, Yangervis
Myers, Wil PT Loss: -10%
Gyorko, Jedd PT Gain: 10%

Rockies | Corey Dickerson put on DL
Colorado Rockies OF Corey Dickerson (foot) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lingering case of plantar fasciitis in his left foot Tuesday, May 19. 1B Ben Paulsen was recalled to take Dickerson's spot on the roster. The Rockies are unsure a DL stint will help his condition, though. 'You can go 15 days, but right when you put that cleat on or take off running that one time, it's right back and it was like a wasted 15 days,' Dickerson said. 'You might as well be out there helping the team or doing what you can do.' Dickerson was hitting .306 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 33 games.  Source: The Denver Post - Nick Groke

BHQ take: Plantar fasciitis cost Angels 1B Albert Pujols 65 games in 2013, so the Rockies have cause to be concerned about the injury's lingering effects. With a .306 BA/.298 xBA and plenty of hard-hit balls (133 HctX), Dickerson was on course to carbon-copy his impressive 2014 campaign in which he tallied a 24-76-.312 line while establishing himself as one of baseball's better young hitters. If this were 2014 when Drew Stubbs performed quite capably, he would be a virtual lock to play in Dickerson's stead, but Stubbs's 2015 has been cruel in historic proportions: 30 punchouts in 50 AB (that's a 40% ct%) and a .120 BA. Paulsen had a nice 66-AB trial with the Rockies last year, hitting .317 with four HR, but he was mired in a month-long slump at AAA-Albuquerque that took his BA down 100 points to its .256 at the time of his call-up. Primarily a first baseman, Paulsen shifted to the OF when Wilin Rosario was sent to Triple-A in order to get 1B reps there. Paulsen is profiled in the Daily Call-ups column. Playing time adjustments are with the shaky assumption that Dickerson's DL stint won't bleed into months.  —Rob Carroll

Impact: Med
Paulsen, Benjamin PT Gain: 5%
Dickerson, Corey PT Loss: -5%

Pirates | Jose Tabata coming up
Pittsburgh Pirates OF Jose Tabata was recalled from the minors Tuesday, May 19.  Source: Pittsburgh Tribune-Review - Rob Biertempfel

BHQ take: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette beat writer Bill Brink wrote in an article and chat May 19 that sending down Wilfredo Boscan and recalling Tabata re-balances PIT to their desired roster of seven RPs and five bench players. He also mentioned that the team may have wanted Steve Lombardozzi, but he hadn't been in the minors for the required 10 days since his demotion. Tabata was batting .352 (91 AB) with 11 BB and eight K at AAA-Indianapolis, but it's on a 38% h%. He's scored 14 times, but it's with much help from his teammates as only three of his 32 hits have gone for extra bases (no HR), and he's 1-for-3 in steal attempts.  —Mike Shears

Impact: Low
Tabata, Jose PT Gain: 5%

Nationals | Jayson Werth lands on DL
Washington Nationals OF Jayson Werth (wrist) was placed on the disabled list with a left wrist contusion Tuesday, May 19. INF Wilmer Difo was called up from Class AA-Harrisburg (Pa.) in a corresponding move.  Source: CSNWashington.com - Mark Zuckerman

BHQ take: Jayson Werth hits the disabled list for the second time this season. He's had a very slow start in 2015. In 101 AB, he's compiled just a .214 xBA and a 53 PX—although his xPX is 104. He had been performing better just before being hit on the wrist last week, but whether he will rebound to recent performance levels now has to be in question. Wilmer Difo is Washington's #9 prospect with an 8C rating; however, his value for 2015 is questionable, since he has a grand total of 52 AB above A-ball. Multiple reports indicate his role will be limited and his recall was due to the fact that the only other position players available on the Nationals' 40-man roster were outfielders Matt den Dekker and Curtis Goodwin and catcher Dan Butler. Given Washington already had Tyler Moore, Clint Robinson, and Michael Taylor available as outfielders, the Nationals decided Difo as an infielder with speed was a better option. More information on Difo is available in the Daily Call-ups column.  —Phil Hertz

Impact: Med
Difo, Wilmer PT Gain: 5%
Werth, Jayson PT Loss: -5%

Rangers | Phil Klein to start Wednesday
Texas Rangers SP Phil Klein will make the start against the Boston Red Sox Wednesday, May 20.  Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Jeff Wilson

BHQ take: Klein replaces the injured Ross Detwiler in the TEX rotation. The towering Klein has only recently been converted from the bullpen, so don't expect many IP in his early outings. He's a hard thrower (career 9.9 Dom) who sometimes has control issues (4.6 Ctl), including 13 BB in just 21 total 2015 IP between TEX and Triple-A. He posted a sparkling 138 MLE BPV in '14, so he has skills, but that was in relief. Given his lack of ML starting experience, and those command issues, the safe play is to watch Klein from a distance for now.  —Rod Truesdell

Impact: Low
Klein, Phil    PT Gain: 2%
Detwiler, Ross    PT Loss: -2%

Tigers | Victor Martínez officially on DL
Detroit Tigers 1B Victor Martínez (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left knee inflammation Tuesday, May 19.  Source: MLB.com

BHQ take: Expect both Rajai Davis and Anthony Gose, who typically share CF, to see regular PT during Martinez' DL stint. Martinez has struggled while trying to play through the knee issue, with a 35 PX and .219 xBA despite sustaining his typical elite ct%. Davis has been swinging a hot stick, showing both more pop and patience than is typical. His .299 xBA suggests his current .275 BA could surge. Gose's .251 xBA and 67% ct% suggest his current .330 BA is due to slide. Davis and Gose are top stolen-base threats who bring speed to the DET lineup. Tyler Collins was recalled from AAA-Toledo to fill the roster slot and he is profiled in the Daily Call-ups column.   —Tom Kephart

Impact: High
Gose, Anthony
Davis, Rajai PT Gain: 10%
Martinez, Victor PT Loss: -10%

Astros | Marwin Gonzalez resting
Houston Astros SS Marwin Gonzalez is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 19. SS Jonathan Villar is starting at the 6 and hitting ninth in the batting order against Oakland Athletics SP Sonny Gray.  Source: Baseball Press

BHQ take: This is five starts over the past seven games for Villar, during which Gonzalez has found his name in the lineup just three times. Neither would appear to have much long-term value while with HOU, given the potential arrival of Carlos Correa by early July and Jed Lowrie's projected return from the DL not long afterward. Still, Villar has that elite running game (3/0 SB/CS) over 44 AB, and both his ct% (80%) and patience are up in the part-time play small sample. With the Astros looking for rotation help, he could be a secondary trade piece that might provide more fantasy value on another team.   —Jock Thompson

Impact: Med
Villar, Jonathan PT Gain: 5%
Gonzalez, Marwin PT Loss: -5%

Blue Jays | Devon Travis remains sidelined
Toronto Blue Jays 2B Devon Travis (shoulder) remains out of the starting lineup Tuesday, May 19. 2B Steven Tolleson is starting at second base and hitting eighth in the batting order against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Héctor Santiago.  Source: Baseball Press

BHQ take: Travis is suffering with left shoulder irritation, and has been replaced in starting lineup on May 17, 18, and 19 by Tolleson. Tolleson has produced at the plate for those first two games, going 4-for-9 with three doubles, three runs scored, and a stolen base. This brief outburst is not going to keep him in the lineup when Travis and José Reyes are both healthy, but could be enough to keep him in TOR as a utility infielder for a while longer.   —Matt Dodge

Impact: Low
Travis, Devon PT Loss: -5%
Tolleson, Steve PT Gain: 5%
Reyes, Jose B
