Tigers | Cameron Maybin in center Monday
Detroit Tigers OF Cameron Maybin is making his season debut in center field and is batting seventh against Minnesota Twins SP José Berríos Monday, May 16. OF Steven Moyà is starting on the bench. Source: Baseball Press
BHQ take: In a somewhat surprising move, DET retained recently promoted Moya while optioning Maybin's CF replacement, Anthony Gose, to Triple-A. Maybin lacks power and makes little hard contact, and his speed has slipped in recent seasons. The exact PT split between Maybin and Moya remains to be determined. Moya was profiled in a recent Call-Ups column. —Tom Kephart

Astros | Evan Gattis to join team Tuesday
Houston Astros OF Evan Gattis will join the team Tuesday, May 17, after spending time in the minors to work as a catcher. Source: ROOT Sports - Julia Morales
BHQ take: Gattis’ return was just the first of several moves that should give him a nice chunk of playing time for now. He takes over the roster spot of 36-year-old Erik Kratz who was designated for assignment—and whose 2-for-29 to date suggests that his MLB window may be closing. Obviously Gattis’s newfound positional flexibility as HOU’s #2 catcher will enhance his fantasy value. Gattis had scuffled at the MLB level (13-for-64, one HR), but his minor league time not only gave him some catching reps, but also may have helped him revive his bat (9-for-25, 3 HR). And the subsequent announcement that Preston Tucker was being optioned to AAA-Fresno should also give Gattis more AB at DH over the near-term. Tucker had been just 5-for-38 (one HR) in May, with little sign of the left-handed pop vR that he’d provided in 2015. HOU is likely attempting to jumpstart his bat with some regular AB, after which Tucker could return. In his place for now, prospect Tony Kemp has been called up to make his MLB debut in the HOU OF, since he’s not going to get much time at second base. The left-handed-hitting Kemp has been an on-base machine with a little speed and not much power, as suggested by his current .298/.410/.405 line through 121 AB at Triple-A. Kemp’s time with HOU will depend on his success in helping an offense that is currently next to the bottom in team batting average. —Jock Thompson

Rays | Three Tampa regulars out vs. lefty
Tampa Bay Rays SS Brad Miller, OF Corey Dickerson and 1B Logan Morrison are not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays left-handed SP J.A. Happ Monday, May 16. SS Taylor Motter is starting at the 6 and is in the two-hole, while OF Brandon Guyer is serving as the designated hitter and batting leadoff. 1B Steve Pearce is at first base and is hitting cleanup. Source: Baseball Press
BHQ take: Updating the TAM middle infield situation while regular 2B Logan Forsythe is on the DL with a fracture in his shoulder blade, super-utility player Taylor Motter was recalled from AAA-Durham. He has logged time at 2B, 3B, SS and RF thus far in 2016 (but the most - 18 games - at SS), and is profiled in the Daily Call-Ups page. He is off to a slow start in 2016 with the bat however, with a .190/.228/.303 line in 142 AB after logging an .837 OPS in 486 AB at the same stop in 2015. Those 2016 results are essentially the same line that Brad Miller has logged against LH pitchers in 135 AB in 2015-16. With Pearce needed at first base and Tim Beckham manning second base, Miller was the only other choice at SS, so Motter is getting a chance and could carve out a utility role if the bat comes back around. —Matt Dodge

Angels | Garrett Richards trying to avoid surgery
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (elbow) will not undergo Tommy John surgery and will instead receive something similar to a platelet-rich plasma injection Monday, May 16. He will be shut down for six weeks. Source: MLB.com - Alden Gonzalez
BHQ take: We had previously zeroed out Richards' 2016 playing time, and see no reason to reinstate it right now. Maybe this does the trick, and Richards can return sometime after the All-Star break, but it still like a long-shot to us at least for now. —Jock Thompson

Nationals | Trea Turner may wait until May 30
Washington Nationals SS Trea Turner could remain in the minors until after May 30, which would ensure he doesn't reach a full year of MLB service time, and he would be under club control until 2022. Source: The Washington Post - James Wagner
BHQ take: With both Danny Espinosa (.207 xBA) and Stephen Drew (.202 xBA) struggling at the plate, the likelihood of Trea Turner being recalled to start at short for Washington is increasing daily. It may, however, take until June before he joins the Nationals in order that Washington can obtain an extra year of team control. Unlike others who were recalled in late April or early May, the Nats have to wait a little longer on Turner because he spent approximately six weeks in the Majors at the end of 2015. So far in 2016, Turner has an .844 OPS with 14 steals at Triple-A Syracuse. —Phil Hertz

Mets | No ligament damage for Steven Matz
New York Mets SP Steven Matz (elbow) received positive news at his medical evaluation Monday, May 16, and there is no ligament damage in his left elbow. The organization will reveal more details Tuesday, May 17. Source: Newsday - Marc Carig
BHQ take: While the news on Steven Matz is good, it appears the Mets will not start Matz against the Nationals in New York this week; however, if all goes well, he may start against the Brewers this weekend and be in line to start in Washington next week. We have restored most of the innings we deducted a week ago when news of his soreness became public. In the accompanying May 11th note, we noted that Matz had been off to a very good start. We also noted that Logan Verrett's good start was not supported by his skills and that owners should proceed with caution. Verrett indeed registered a PQS disaster in his start in place of Matz. In a side note, the Mets are expected to recall Matt Reynolds from Triple-A Las Vegas. He will essentially be replacing Wilmer Flores as the Mets' utility infielder. When Flores was DL'd, the Mets chose to add an extra arm while they awaited word on Matz. With his situation firming up, they can now replace a pitcher with Reynolds. The former second round draft pick had a .721 OPS in 2015 at Triple-A and has a .672 OPS so far in 2016. Once he is officially recalled, he will be covered in the Daily Call-ups column. —Phil Hertz

Diamondbacks | David Peralta lands on DL
Arizona Diamondbacks OF David Peralta (wrist) was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right wrist inflammation Sunday, May 15. OF Michael Bourn's contract was purchased from the minors in a corresponding move. Source: CBSSports.com
BHQ take: Updating a recent item, ARI determined that Peralta was far enough from ready to warrant a trip to the DL, and with an effective date of May 9, he’ll miss at least another week’s worth of games. Bourn started the season in Toronto’s Single-A affiliate before being waived and subsequently signed by ARI, which became his fourth organization since the start of 2015. Five years removed from his second of his two 60-steal seasons, he’s 27-for-40 in 870 AB in the last two, and 2015 saw his Spd (115) dip to its lowest mark since his rookie year. A longtime centerfielder, Bourn has a chance to see some action there—which could eat into CF Chris Owings’ PT unless the team decides that Nick Ahmed’s superior glove can no longer compensate for his .175/.239/.278 production and moves Owings back to his natural position. The Diamondbacks are a tick above league average in SB proficiencies, so Bourn may have the opportunity to earn some short-term value if his 33-year-old legs oblige. —Rob Carroll

Pirates | Jung Ho Kang carries offense past Cubs
Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang doubled in a run in the seventh inning and added a solo shot in the top of the ninth, accounting for both runs in a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday, May 15. Source: ESPN.com
BHQ take: For the third straight day, Kang started at third base for the Pirates. Kang has belted four home runs since coming off the DL on May 6 (7-for-24). While one online Pittsburgh sports report on Sunday said Kang isn't moving at 100 percent on his left knee, Kang has shown in this small sample that he hasn't lost his power (144 HctX, 271 PX entering Sunday). —Rick Green
