Angels adopt closer-by-committee

In his most recent one-plus inning spanning two appearances, Ernesto Frieri (RHP, LAA) has coughed up three homers, including two game-winners, prompting manager Mike Scioscia to declare a closer-by-committee before the Angels run out of opportunities in their wild-card chase. Frieri will share endgame duties with Scott Downs (LHP, LAA) and Kevin Jepsen (RHP, LAA).

Frieri was a first-half savior for the Angels after they acquired him from the Padres in early May, racking up 10 saves with a ridiculous 97% strand rate through June. Some normalization was to be expected in the second half, but it has hit Frieri like whiplash: a 5.11 ERA fueled by a 56% fly ball rate and 21% hr/f....
