ROTISSERIE: The Reliability of Ratio-Protecting Relievers

In a previous article, I recommended “quality over quantity” as a useful rule of thumb for pitching. Unless and until you find yourself in the position of needing to make up ground in K and W, even at the risk of taking damage to your pitching ratios, the prudent choice will generally be to prioritize ERA and WHIP in borderline decisions regarding which pitchers to roster and start. One way to put the “quality over quantity for pitching” principle into practice is to start highly skilled relievers rather than marginal starting pitchers. This tactic becomes even more appealing as offense continues to increase across the league (MLB OPS by month: .676 in April, .711 in May, .724 in June).
