The two most widely used methods of player valuation are Standings Gain Points (SGP) and Percent Value Method (PVM). For those unfamiliar with the concepts (or who want a refresher), SGP estimates the quantity of a statistic required to gain a point in the standings, using the distribution of each standings category. For example, depending on the league and the season, 31 RBI might, on average, move you up one place in the final standings. A player who hits 124 RBI would be worth a theoretical four points. PVM assigns a value based on the scarcity of a statistic; a hitter who hits 1% of the home runs will be assigned 1% of the dollar value allocated to home runs.
