KEEPERS: Postmortem: 2017 takeaways—Part II

Apart from the Ks, upbeat rotation news is tough to find... In last week's hitter-and-HR-focused column, we briefly touched on MLB's record-setting strikeouts and the obvious link to stagnant batting averages. Overall, MLB pitchers posted a cumulative 8.25 K/9 historic high, breaking the 40,000 strikeout mark—40,104 to be precise—for the first time ever. For a different perspective as to the strikeout's domination of today's game, the 2017 effort comes in fewer IP than in any season since 2005—when MLB pitchers posted a cumulative 6.30 K/9. Since that time, MLB K/9 has maintained an uninterrupted  upward trajectory for 12 consecutive seasons.
