This article will take a deeper look into how the top 25 teams in the 2017 DC game managed the six starting pitcher (SP) roster spots along with the single swing position (SW).
As pointed out by one of our subscribers in the first challenge article published in December, the top 25 teams in 2017 were able to increase wins (127W versus 119W) and strikeouts (2060K versus 1928K) over the 2016 season while the total number of innings pitched declined.
The top 25 teams in 2016 averaged 1715 IP while the top 25 teams in 2017 averaged 1685 IP—about 30 more innings per team for the entire year. In 2016, the major league average for IP per game started (GS) was 5.6 while in 2017 the IP/GS were 5.5 (5.8 in 2015 and 6.0 in 2014).
