Setup and context: We know all about Arrieta now, but didn't know it then: this was just his second start of the season after missing the first month due to offseason shoulder tightness. His stuff was there, but injuries and a lack of sustained success held him back. The Cubs as a team had started very poorly (12-21), and reinforcements from the minor leagues (Baez, Soler, Alcantara) were still months away.
