I am writing the beginning of this column on Monday. I have just checked the results of the FAAB bidding in Tout Wars and found out that I am this week's lucky winner. I bid 25% of my remaining $86 budget on a 31-year-old player with an MLB career of 260 at-bats and a Mendoza Line batting average.
Yes, Brad Eldred is mine, and thankfully for a Vickrey-adjusted $17. But he's a perfect fit for my big power, low average team. The only problem is that I won a moderately aggressive bid on a player who has already failed in the majors three times, at ages 24, 26 and 29. And I am banking that 80 incredible at-bats in Triple-A will have turned a 31-year-old into a valuable roto-commodity. Is that asking too much?
