Facts & Flukes

It’s been an exciting week for Ubaldo Jimenez (RHP, CLE). First, the dust-up with his former Colorado teammates; then, he took a no-hitter into the seventh inning on Saturday. While he needs to serve a five-day suspension, it won’t have much effect due to days off in the early schedule.

Another season, another crossroads in the volatile career of Francisco Liriano (LHP, MIN). Whether due to injury or ineffectiveness (sometimes both), Liriano seems to constantly vacillate between success and disaster. Coming off a season that was decidedly of the latter variety, what can be expected of Liriano in 2012?

Freddie Freeman (1B, ATL) delivered a solid rookie season, mixing a decent batting average with good power and run production. Detroit may be less than 400 miles from Milwaukee, but it might as well be a parallel universe for Prince Fielder (1B, DET). Not only will he be facing a slate of pitchers he hasn’t seen very often, but he’s also going to have to adjust to a change in venue.

When the Rangers signed Adrian Beltre (3B, TEX) before the start of the 2010 season, it looked like Michael Young (3B, TEX) would be relegated to a life as a full-time DH. Rickie Weeks (2B, MIL) started quickly last year, earning his first All-Star selection with a .283-14-33 first half. But like so often in the past, injuries derailed his season. Now 29, Weeks will be counted on to help pick up the offensive slack following Prince Fielder's (1B, DET) departure.

In a spring training battle for a roster slot? Just make a good early impression—like hot-hitting Ryan Raburn (2B/OF, DET), who’s vying for the Tigers’ opening day second base position. Despite the start, Raburn has fairly one-dimensional the past few years.

After a troubling 2010 in which leg injuries limited him to a career-low of AB, Jimmy Rollins (SS, PHI) headed into his 2011 walk season playing for a new contract. He did enough to secure at least three more seasons in Philadelphia, though his skills have decidedly flattened out in recent seasons.

Josh Collmenter (RHP, ARI) was called to fill in as Arizona's fifth starter early last year and ran with the opportunity, posting a sub-3.00 ERA and a WHIP below 1.00 in the season's first half. He wasn't quite as good from July on, but kept the job. But does Collmenter have the skills to merit fanalytic consideration?

In a lineup full of more veteran boppers, Brett Gardner (OF, NYY) provides some youth and zip on the bases. Gardner has become a great asset to the Yankees because of his speed and defense, but is there room for more growth in his game?
