Dr. HQ: This week's injury roundup

Corky Miller (C, CIN)
Injury: Bruised right quad muscle
DL date: August 8
Estimated DL time: This should not be an extended DL stint, pointing to a return before September 1. He might even earn a demotion to Triple-A if he comes back too quickly due to the log jam at catcher for the Reds.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Rickie Weeks (2B, MIL)
Injury: Strained left hamstring. That’s the kind of season he’s had—tripping over his own bat and landing on the DL.
DL date: August 8
Estimated DL time: Weeks is down for he year and needs surgery t repair the damage, telling us it's a significant injury.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Out for 2013.

Ryan Doumit (C/OF, MIN)
Injury: Concussion
DL date: August 8
Estimated DL time: Unless he exhibits some lingering concussion syndrome symptoms, he should return in roughly 10-14 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Matt Guerrier (RHP, CHC)
Injury: Sore right elbow
DL date: August 8
Estimated DL time: He’s now on the 60-day DL and done for the 2013 season.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Out for 2013.

Thomas Neal (OF, CHC)
Injury: Dislocated right shoulder
DL date: August 8
Estimated DL time: Probably the rest of the season considering the damage a dislocation usually causes.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Likely out for 2013

Christian Friedrich (LHP, COL)
Injury: Lower back inflammation
DL date: August 8
Estimated DL time: The Rockies made the move to open up a 40-man roster spot. He’s not expected to pitch for them this season.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Tyler Chatwood (RHP, COL)
Injury: Inflamed right elbow
DL date: August 1
Estimated DL time: How much time he misses depends on the MRI done on the elbow on Friday. If his ulnar collateral ligament is intact, he should return this season—possibly before rosters expand.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected

Matt Thornton (LHP, BOS)
Injury: Strained right oblique
DL date: August 5
Estimated DL time: His strain does not appear to be as severe as most of the oblique strains that pitchers suffer, which can cost them upwards of four weeks on the DL. Look for his return between 3-4 weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None likely

Carlos Gonzalez (OF, COL)
Injury: Sprained finger—right hand. The injury made it difficult to grip the bat, making it necessary for the DL stint. He first injured the finger back on July 7.
DL date: August 5
Estimated DL time: The short rest the Rockies gave him didn’t help. How much DL time he’ll need remains unknown. He could miss up to a month if the sprain does not respond to extended rest.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None likely

Corey Kluber (RHP, CLE)
Injury: Sprained finger—right hand
DL date: Aug 6
Estimated DL time: His injury is a borderline grade two sprain, meaning he could miss up to six weeks. He could return a little more quickly than that if he can grip the baseball and throw a breaking ball sooner.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Bobby Parnell (RHP, NYM)
Injury: Herniated disc—cervical spine. He has lost some shoulder strength and has discomfort in his neck. He will have an epidural injection in a few days.
DL date: August 1
Estimated DL time: If the epidural does not help reduce the herniation and discomfort, Parnell may elect to have surgery and his 2013 season would be over.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Likely out for the rest of 2013.

Desmond Jennings (OF, TB)
Injury: Fractured finger—left hand
DL date: August 4
Estimated DL time: It does not sound as thought it’s a complete fracture, suggesting he could be back in 3-4 weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected

Derek Jeter (SS, NYY)
Injury: Grade one strained right calf
DL date: August 3
Estimated DL time: The debate this winter will focus on Jeter’s inability to remain healthy this season and whether his body is failing him at 39-years-old. He should be back before the end of the month.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Eric Chavez (3B, ARI)
Injury: Hip and knee injuries

DL date: August 10

Estimated DL time: He’s got to be the oldest 35-year-old in baseball—seems like he’s been around forever. Look for Chavez to return in 15-18 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Brandon Snyder (3B, BOS)

Injury: Ulnar neuritis—right elbow. This can be a painful injury requiring a significant rest period before resuming throwing.

DL date: August 8

Estimated DL time: We don’t know how serious it is, thus it is difficult to project how much time he will miss. Out indefinitely.

Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None at the moment.

Lorenzo Cain (OF, KC)

Injury: Strained left oblique

DL date: August 9

Estimated DL time: This injury will also give his groin injury time to heal better. Cain is likely out until rosters expand in September.

Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected

Howie Kendrick (2B, LAA)

Injury: Sprained left knee

DL date: August 6

Estimated DL time: This does not appear to be a grade two sprain where there is noticeable damage to the ligaments. He should return in 15-18 days.

Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected

Carlos Quentin (OF, SD)

Injury: Sprained right knee

DL date: July 31

Estimated DL time: His sprained knee was not responding to treatment fast enough, thus the need to place him on the DL back to July 31. He probably won’t be ready until the last full week of August.

Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None likely

Juan Perez (LHP, TOR)

Injury: Torn ulnar collateral ligament—left elbow

DL date: August 10
Estimated DL time: Out for 2013 and not likely to return until late next season.

Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Out for the year.
