DR HQ: Updates on Stanton, Gordon, plus Buchholz, Montero analysis

Rehab Update:

Giancarlo Stanton (OF, MIA)
Injury: Recovery from surgery to remove the hamate bone from his left hand.
Rehab Update: The initial projection had Stanton missing roughly six weeks. Six weeks will be the first weekend in August, and that appears to be a base case scenario. He won’t start dry swings (swinging without a baseball) until July 25-27 and still needs to show he can hit a baseball without any pain. A return in mid-August now appears more likely.

Injury Notes:

Miguel Montero (C, CHC)
Injury: Sprained left thumb
DL date: Retro July 12
Estimated DL time: Montero is being treated for roughly two weeks, and then he’ll be re-evaluated. The current estimation is he’ll be out at least six weeks, though that could change.

Dee Gordon (2B, MIA)
Injury: Dislocated left thumb
DL date: Retro to July 12
Estimated DL time: Gordon could start playing in a few rehab games in the next couple of days. He still will need time on a rehab assignment and isn’t expected back before the first week of August. Once he returns, he should pick up where he left off.

Clay Buchholz (RHP, BOS)
Injury: Tightness – right elbow
DL date: Retro to July 11
Estimated DL time: The Red Sox reset his rehab program after he struggled with more discomfort early in his recovery. Dr. James Andrews gave him a platelet-rich plasma injection during a recent visit, and he is in shutdown mode. While the Red Sox hint he could return before the end of the season and Buchholz says he will be back, his injury history suggests otherwise. Plan as though he’s out for the year.

David Freese (3B, LAA)
Injury: Fractured right index finger
DL date: July 23
Estimated DL time: 17-21 days. Earlier this season he suffered a fractured middle finger and needed 18 days to recover. Expect a similar timetable this time around.

Steve Pearce (OF, SF)
Injury: Strained left oblique
DL date: July 19
Estimated DL time: Pearce’s injury doesn’t appear to be that serious. He could return in roughly three weeks without any setbacks in his rehab work.

Jason Vargas (LHP, KC)
Injury: Torn UCL – pitching elbow
DL date: July 23
Estimated DL time: Vargas just came off the disabled list from a strained hip is now out for the year and will need Tommy John surgery. He is expected to return late in the 2016 season.

Chad Billingsley (RHP, PHI)
Injury: Inflamed flexor tendon – right arm
DL date: July 19
Estimated DL time: It's highly unlikely he returns this season even if he doesn’t need surgery. Billingsley also has some tingling in his pitching hand that might suggest some nerve involvement, too.

Manny Parra (LHP, CIN)
Injury: Strained left elbow
DL date: July 20
Estimated DL time: Unknown. He had surgery over the winter to clean up the elbow. This injury does not appear to be related to that situation. It’s possible he could return in August even though the Reds have not released a timetable for his return.

A.J. Ellis (C, LA)
Injury: Inflammation – right knee
DL date: July 20
Estimated DL time: The MRI ruled out any structural damage, and he should return in 17-24 days according to initial reports.

Jordy Mercer (SS, PIT)
Injury: Sprained MCL (medial collateral ligament) left knee; contusion lower left leg
DL date: July 20
Estimated DL time: It’s a grade 1+ to a grade 2 sprain. He doesn’t need surgery and is projected back in roughly six weeks. Because it’s the medial (inside) ligament and not the lateral (outside), this injury can linger a bit longer because the healing process is a bit slower.

Chase Anderson (RHP, ARI)
Injury: Inflammation right triceps
DL date: July 19
Estimated DL time: Anderson downplays the malady even though he has not pitched well since earlier in the season. This injury could explain his struggles. He got a few extra days off, and that didn’t help him, so a DL stint is warranted. Look for the Diamondbacks to give him at least three weeks, possibly four weeks on the DL to make sure the discomfort and regain his arm strength.

Chad Bettis (RHP, COL)
Injury: Inflammation right elbow
DL date: July 19
Estimated DL time: The Rockies have not revealed a timetable for his return. They will make sure he’s healthy before activating him and a DL stint of at least a month wouldn’t be a surprise.

Gorkys Hernandez (OF, PIT)
Injury: Inflammation non-throwing shoulder
DL date: Retro to July 13.
Estimated DL time: The fact the Pirates thought a handful of days off might clear up the ailment before placing him on the DL points to a minor ailment. Hernandez could return after just 17 or 18 days on the DL.

Andrew Susac (C, SF)
Injury: Sprained right thumb
DL date: July 19
Estimated DL time: He won’t need surgery, and the Giants medical staff doesn’t believe he will be out more than 15-20 days.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia (C, ARI)
Injury: Strained neck
DL date: Retro to July 12
Estimated DL time: He doesn’t appear to have any disc involvement that is causing the discomfort. He should return to the Diamondbacks before the first full week in August.

Jason Grilli (RHP, ATL)
Injury: Ruptured left Achilles tendon
DL date: July 12
Estimated DL time: Out for the 2015 season and his career may be over due to his age.
