Dr. HQ: Two Red Sox hit the DL, plus injury updates

Shane Victorino (OF, BOS)
Injury: Strained left hamstring. Victorino couldn’t seem to shake this ailment with a few days off.
DL date: May 21
Estimated DL time: The Red Sox don’t think his DL stint will last more than 15-18 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: His base running could suffer a bit early in his return.

Will Middlebrooks (3B, BOS)
Injury: Lower back spasms. It doesn’t appear the spasms are disc-related or connected to the ribcage ailment he suffered earlier.
DL date: May 24
Estimated DL time:  The Red Sox medical staff believe they can clear up this malady in the near term. He shouldn't miss much more than the minimum 15 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected

Sean Marshall (LHP, CIN)
Injury: Sprained left shoulder. Less than a month ago, he was activated from the DL due to shoulder fatigue. A sprained shoulder likely means he has a slightly torn ligament involving in the A/C joint of his shoulder.
DL date: May 21
Estimated DL time: This is a tough one without more information. Media reports suggest he won’t need more than 12-21 days. We’ll see.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Two stints on the DL with a shoulder problem that could nag him the rest of the season would curtail his performance.

Hiram Burgos (RHP, MIL)
Injury: Right shoulder impingement.
DL date: May 22
Estimated DL time: Approximately four weeks. The injury database has a wide range of DL times for this ailment. It depends upon how long he needs to get the inflammation down and return his shoulder strength back to normal.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: If he does not come back too soon we shouldn’t see any noticeable issues with his shoulder.

Darren Oliver (LHP, TOR)
Injury: Sore left shoulder. The Jays have not released the exact details of his shoulder ailment, but it does not appear to be serious right now.
DL date: May 19
Estimated DL time: One has to wonder if this 42-year-old can avoid an extended stay on the DL.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: A possible decrease in stamina.

Chase Utley (2B, PHI)
Injury: Strained oblique.
DL date: May 21
Estimated DL time: The Phillies have projected he will be out 15-28 days, suggesting his strain isn’t as serious as the typical oblique injury. Look for a return right around three weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None.

Shawn Camp (RHP, CHN)
Injury: Sprained right big toe. It doesn’t sound like a serious injury, but it can make it tough for a pitcher to push off the pitching rubber.
DL date: May 22
Estimated DL time: The projected downtime is 17-21 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None.

Trevor Plouffe (3B, MIN)
Injury: Concussion. Initial tests did not reveal a serious concussion.
DL date: May 22
Estimated DL time: The Twins don’t expect Plouffe to miss much more than 7-10 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None if the concussion symptoms have cleared up.

Fernando Salas (RHP, STL)
Injury: Right shoulder Inflammation. He also has some weakness in the shoulder, which might have caused the inflammation to surface.
DL date: May 21
Estimated DL time: If he can regain the shoulder strength quickly enough, he could keep his DL stint down to 17-21 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  Possible restrictions in working back-to-back games the first few weeks after his return.

Carlos Ruiz (C, PHI)
Injury: Grade 2 strained right hamstring.
DL date: May 21
Estimated DL time: He struggled with a similar ailment last year (to the same leg), but was able to avoid the DL. Ruiz has had multiple DNPs due to leg, knee, and foot ailments. Look for a return June 8-12.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Santiago Casilla (RHP, SF)
Injury:  Right knee cyst.
DL date: May 21
Estimated DL time: The Giants believe that rest and treatment will help get Casilla back to the bullpen in under three weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Ryan Vogelsong (RHP, SF)
Injury: Multiple fractures in right hand. Surgery set the two fractures in his hand.
DL date: May 21
Estimated DL time: The Giants indicate he’ll miss 6-8 weeks. Because the breaks were in his throwing hand, he is likely going to need almost eight weeks to recover and be activated.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Ryan Mattheus (RHP, WAS)
Injury: Fractured right hand. Mattheus lost a fight with a locker after a poor outing.
DL date: May 20
Estimated DL time:  He did not need surgery, but he’ll still need close to eight weeks to recover.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Jaime Garcia (LHP, STL)
Injury: Left shoulder pain. After surgery it was revealed he had a small tear in the labrum in his left shoulder.
DL date: May 18
Estimated DL time: Out for the 2013 season. As we wrote during spring training, Garcia was at a much greater risk to suffer a relapse after last year’s shoulder problem. Next spring, the odds are better that he can pitch the 2014 season without another shoulder injury.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Out for 2013 with a return expected early next season.

Curtis Granderson (OF, NYY)
Injury: Fractured pinkie finger – left hand. He has a fracture at the knuckle but it isn’t serious enough to require surgery.
DL date: May 25
Estimated DL time: This injury typically requires 4-6 weeks recovery time. Split the difference and plan for five weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected.

Pedro Strop (RHP, BAL)
Injury: Strained lower back.
DL date: May 24
Estimated DL time: This looks like it's muscle related and his DL stint should not be an extended one.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected.

Wilkin Ramirez (OF, MIN)
Injury: Concussion
DL date: May 26
Estimated DL time: His symptoms do not appear to be the type that would keep him out for a lengthy period of time. He should return in 7-10 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None likely.

Jim Henderson (RHP, MIL)
Injury: Strained right hamstring.
DL date: May 25
Estimated DL time: It didn’t look like he could return if he rested for a few days, hence the trip to the DL. The Brewers should activate him between 15-20 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: He may be skipped over in back-to-back efforts the first week or so he’s back.

Rehab Updates:

Mark Teixeira (1B, NYY)
Injury: Torn tendon sheath – right wrist.
Rehab update and ETA: He is out on rehab building up the strength in his swing. His 60-day DL stint ends Thursday, May 30, and he’s expected to be activated on Friday, May 31.
