DR HQ: Puig, Iwakuma suffer setbacks; Smyly done for the year

Dillon Gee (RHP, NYM)
Injury: Strained right groin
DL date: May 4 (retroactive)
Estimated DL time: Initially the Mets though he was almost ready to return. Eventually, they realized he would need more time to recover, and they don’t want to risk an arm injury due to a groin injury. He’s received an injection to help reduce the discomfort last week and is making progress. He looks to be back early in June.

Kelly Johnson (3B, ATL)
Injury: Strained oblique – right side (grade 1)
DL date: May 14
Estimated DL time: Johnson is looking at 21-24 days before he’s able to return to the Braves.

Alex Cobb (RHP, TB)
Injury: Torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) – pitching elbow
DL date: April 5
Estimated DL time: Cobb gave it a go as far as a rehab program with his right elbow, but it didn’t report to treatment. He underwent surgery on May 14 to repair his UCL. His projected return is likely June or July 2016.

Drew Smyly (LHP, TB)
Injury: Torn labrum – left shoulder
DL date: May 6
Estimated DL time: If he undergoes surgery as expected, Smyly won’t return until early to midseason 2016. If he does not have significant damage, Smyly should be able to return to his prior level of performance at some point in 2017 or so.

Kevin Gausman (LHP, BAL)
Injury: Tendinitis – right shoulder
DL date: May 7
Estimated DL time: The good news is the MRI did not detect any structural damage. If his treatment and rehab can clear up the inflammation and his shoulder strength returns, he should be effective after the break. If he returns before the break, be patient as he is likely to struggle initially.

Michael Saunders (OF, TOR)
Injury: Inflammation and fluid – left knee
DL date: May 10
Estimated DL time: Saunders has had a cortisone injection and had his knee drained all in the last week. He continues to have trouble with the knee that had 70% of the meniscus removed back in February 2015. He’s inching closer to being a lost cause for the 2015 season even if he returns just after the break. And and playing on the hard surface in his home games isn’t going to help.

Yonder Alonso (1B, SD)
Injury: Bruised right shoulder
DL date: May 8
Estimated DL time: The Padres medical staff believes he can return in 15-18 days. Once the shoulder loosens up, he’ll increase his rehab work and a return to action is right around the corner.

Brett Oberholtzer (LHP, HOU)
Injury: Blister – pitcher hand (finger)
DL date: May 14
Estimated DL time: Unknown. His first trip to the disabled list for the same ailment was six weeks. It is unlikely it will be that long this time around but a month isn’t out of the question.

Jason Vargas (RHP, KC)
Injury: Flexor Strain – pitching forearm
DL date: May 6
Estimated DL time: Diagnostic testing ruled out a tear of the UCL and only damage to the flexor mass. The Royals believe he can return late in May or early in June.

Chris Martin (RHP, NYY)
Injury: Tendinitis – right elbow
DL date: May 9
Estimated DL time: Martin should be able to recover and return the first week of June based on early reports.

Justin Masterson (RHP, BOS)
Injury: Tendinitis – right shoulder
DL date: May 13
Estimated DL time: Is this a problem that turns out to be a convenience so he can fix his mechanics? Or has he really been battling tendinitis in his right shoulder? We may not know the answer to that question for a while. We won’t see him pitching against for Boston until the middle of June at the earliest.

Jon Jay (OF, STL)
Injury: Tendinitis – left wrist
DL date: May 11
Estimated DL time: Unknown but based on the description of the injury he should return very early in June.

Jason Garcia (RHP, BAL)
Injury: Tendinitis – right shoulder
DL date: May 11
Estimated DL time: Look for a slow recovery since he is a Rule 5 selection from last December. He might not return until right around the break.

Ryan Flaherty (2B, BAL)
Injury: Strained right groin
DL date: May 12
Estimated DL time: He was given a PRP injection to help speed up the healing process. He looks to be roughly three weeks away from activation barring any kind of setback or slow down in his recovery.

Pedro Baez (RHP, LA)
Injury: Strained right pectoral muscle.
DL date: May 14
Estimated DL time: It will take him a little bit of time to regain his strength. Even though his strain looks to be a grade 1 type, we won’t see him back until early in June.

Alex Avila (C, DET)
Injury: Loose bodies – left knee
DL date: May 7
Estimated DL time: Avila and the Tigers hope to avoid surgery until after the season. He’s rehab in the hope treatment will clear up as much inflammation and soreness as possible. Once he’s at a level where he can tolerate the pain he’ll go out on a rehab assignment. A return in late June or early July appears likely at this point.

Jean Segura (SS, MIL)
Injury: fractured pinky finger – right hand
DL date: May 13
Estimated DL time: Unknown. The Brewers haven’t revealed yet if the fracture is non-displaced or not. If he doesn’t need surgery, Segura could return in 3-4 weeks.

Rehab Updates

Yasiel Puig (OF, LA)
Injury: Strained right hamstring
Rehab Update: Puig suffered a setback this week and was shut down for a couple of days while he was re-evaluated. He has an increase in inflammation around the original injury, but he does not have a new or bigger tear. This setback is likely to push his return into late June – early July unless he suddenly starts healing at a faster pace.

Hisashi Iwakuma (RHP, SEA)
Injury: Strained right latissimus dorsi
Rehab Update: He’s in shutdown mode after suffering a setback during his rehab. He is now out indefinitely though a return just after the all-star break is likely.
