Dr. HQ May 5, 2013

Neil Walker (2B, PIT)
Injury: Laceration on right hand.
DL Date:  April 27
Estimated DL time: 15-17 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None.

Gavin Floyd (RHP, CHA)
Injury: A partial tear of the flexor muscle mass near his right elbow. He may also have some damage to the ulnar collateral ligament. His elbow problems started in July 2012 when he landed on the DL with tendinitis in the flexor tendon.
DL Date: April 28
Estimated DL time: Even if he avoids Tommy John surgery, Floyd is close to being done for this season.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  Likely out for 2013.

Josh Johnson (RHP, TOR)
Injury: Strained right triceps. The Blue Jays thought he could avoid the DL but the triceps did not respond enough to treatment.
DL Date: April 29
Estimated DL time: So much for my spring declaration he would avoid the DL this season. By all accounts he should return in roughly three weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  None expected.

Phil Coke (LHP, DET)
Injury: Strained left groin.
DL Date: April 26
Estimated DL time: It’s a grade one injury meaning he should return in 15-17 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  None expected.

Coco Crisp (OF, OAK)
Injury: Strained left hamstring.
DL Date: April 30
Estimated DL time: The A’s don’t believe it’s a grade two strain so we should see him back no later than 21 days after his DL date.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  He may be a bit cautious when he is activated but this injury should not have a noticeable affect on his base running.

Brett Anderson (LHP, OAK)
Injury: Sprained right ankle. He first sprained it during his outing at Tampa Bay. He has struggled since and they elected to place him on the DL to get him healthy and avoid an arm injury due to the ankle.
DL Date: April 30.
Estimated DL time: A veteran A’s observer believes he will need only the minimum DL time for it to heal enough for activation around 15-17 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  There shouldn’t be any problems with the ankle.

Peter Bourjos (OF, LA)
Injury: Strained left hamstring. Bourjos pulled it trying to leg out a groundball during the 19-inning marathon game. Because it’s tightness the ailment should heal quickly.
DL Date: April 30
Estimated DL time: Look for a short stay on the DL with Bourjos returning between May 15-17.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  None likely.

Joe Mahoney (1B, MIA)
Injury: Strained right hamstring.
DL Date: April 28
Estimated DL time: His injury is not as severe as Stanton’s and he should be back in less than three weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  None

Giancarlo Stanton (OF, MIA)
Injury: Grade two right hamstring strain. You can bet they won’t rush him back and risk a setback or a bigger tear.
DL Date: April 30
Estimated DL time: A grade two strain requires 2-6 weeks recovery and the Marlins split it stating they believe he’ll miss about a month.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  None expected.

Kevin Youkilis (1B/3B, NYY)
Injury: Herniated disc – lumbar (lower back) region.
DL Date: April 28
Estimated DL time: Between 3-4 weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  His playing time could be reduced a bit early in his return to prevent a relapse.

Chris Heisey  (OF, CIN)
Injury: Strained right hamstring.
DL Date: April 28
Estimated DL time: Look for a return the middle week of May.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  None expected.

Sean Burnett (LHP, LA)
Injury: Irritation, left forearm.
DL Date: April 27
Estimated DL time: The forearm inflammation he has should clear up fairly quickly and he should return between 15-20 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  None likely.

Taylor Teagarden (C, BAL)
Injury: Dislocated left thumb.
DL Date: April 28.
Estimated DL time: It does appear that he suffered ligament damage and because this is to his glove hand we could see him back between 15-21 days if he can play with some sort of splint.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:  He may have some minor issues holding on to the bat when he first returns.

Ted Lilly (LHP, LA)
Injury: Strained ribcage (right-side) muscle. He was given an injection (most likely cortisone) but it didn’t help clear up the pain.
DL Date:
April 30
Estimated DL time:
He’s likely to return in 17-21 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:
None expected.

Hanley Ramirez (SS/3B, LA)
Injury:
Strained left hamstring. He suffered the injury going from first to third on the bases.
DL Date: May 4

Estimated DL time: Three to four weeks based on an early assessment.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:
Combined with two DL stints already and the likelihood he’ll be cautious when he returns, he won’t come close to 20 steals this year.

Chris Young (OF, OAK)
Injury:
Strained left quadriceps. The A’s tried to nurse him along but the injury did not respond quickly enough.
DL Date:
April 30

Estimated DL time: Probably 15-20 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:
 None likely.

Joba Chamberlain (RHP, NYY)
Injury:
Strained right oblique.
DL Date:
April 28

Estimated DL time: He’s not the best conditioned pitcher in the game for sure meaning he could need a four-week hiatus before being activated.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:
 None.

Rehab Updates:

Adam Eaton (OF, ARI)
Injury: Sprained ulnar collateral ligament, left elbow
Rehab update and ETA: Sent to the Diamondbacks Triple-A team for rehab roughly ten days earlier than expected. Barring a setback he should return before the end of May.

Michael Bourn (OF, CLE)
Injury:
Lacerated right index finger.
Rehab update and ETA:
He starts his rehab assignment on May 6 and is exacted back May 10.

Henderson Alvarez (RHP, MIA)
Injury: Strained right shoulder
Rehab update and ETA: He has had a significant setback with more right shoulder pain. He is in shutdown mode indefinitely.

Matt Garza (RHP, CHN)
Injury: Stress reaction right elbow.
Rehab update and ETA: The Cubs have sent him to Double-A for his rehab assignment. He’ll need 2-4 more rehab outings before being activated that puts his return May 13-19.

Francisco Cervelli (C, NYY)
Injury: Fractured right hand.
Rehab update and ETA: Because he was moved to the 60-day DL, the Yankees medical staff must believe he will need eight weeks to recover from this injury.
