Dr. HQ June 15, 2013

Troy Tulowitzki (SS, COL)
Injury: Fractured rib – right side. He suffered the injury diving for a ball into the shortstop hole. It’s painful to breathe and will be for a while. Movement with his torso will also make baseball-related activities painful for a while.
DL date: June 14
Estimated DL time: The first hurdle is how quickly the rib will heal and not re-fracture with activities. How much time he spends on the sidelines without working out will tell us the length of his DL stint. Right now between 5-6 weeks, but it could be a bit longer.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: He may become more conservative in the field, preferring not to dive for a ball and risk another fracture.

Kevin Youkilis (3B, NYY)
Injury: Strained lower back.
DL date: June 14
Estimated DL time: Unknown at this time. This is the second time he’s been on the DL with the ailment. Does he have some sort of disc issue? It sure sounds like it. Look for Youkilis to be out roughly three weeks at this point.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown.

AJ Burnett (RHP, PIT)
Injury: Strained right calf (grade 1 strain).
DL date: June 9
Estimated DL time: Grade 1 strains are roughly 14-17 days maximum and he should be back by then.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected.

Zach Putnam (RHP, CHC)
Injury: Bone spur – right elbow.
DL date: June 12
Estimated DL time: How long he is out depends on the course of treatment. If he has surgery it could cost him most of the remaining of the 2013 season. If only a cortisone injection and rest are necessary, he could return in 4-6 weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown at this time.

Cameron Maybin (OF, SD)
Injury: Sprained left knee (damage to the posterior cruciate ligament).
DL date: June 10
Estimated DL time: The early projection has Maybin missing six weeks. If he regains the strength and stability in his knee quicker than expected, he could return between 4-6 weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: He is likely to curtail his base stealing early on when he does return.

Edgmer Escalona (RHP, COL)
Injury: Inflammation in right elbow. His recent struggles are now at least partially explained by his elbow problems.
DL date: June 10
Estimated DL time: If the inflammation is due to a bone spur, he could be out as much as six weeks; if he needs surgery, he could miss most (if not all) of the remaining part of 2013.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected.

Robert Coello (RHP, LAA)
Injury: Inflammation in right shoulder.
DL date: June 10
Estimated DL time: Without more details it’s hard to calculate how much time he will need. A general 3-6 weeks is probably the most realistic range for now.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown at this time.

Pablo Sandoval (3B, SF)
Injury: Strained left foot.
DL date: June 9
Estimated DL time: Early indications are he is recovering quickly. Returning about June 25-26 is likely.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None.

Clayton Mortensen (RHP, BOS)
Injury: Impingement – right hip (femoral acetabular impingement, or FAI). He’s struggled with the ailment since April, but it has gotten worse recently. This is the same ailment that Alex Rodriguez has struggled with in his right hip.
DL date: June 11
Estimated DL time: Until he gets a complete workup and we get the results, it is hard to determine how long he’ll be out. Out indefinitely at the moment.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown.

Wandy Rodriguez (LHP, PIT)
Injury: Left forearm tightness.
DL date: June 6
Estimated DL time: This does not appear to be a serious injury. When most of the soreness in the forearm dissipates, he’ll resume throwing. Look for his return in 17-21 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected.

Scott Van Slyke (OF, LAD)
Injury: Bursitis – left shoulder.
DL date: June 11
Estimated DL time: Once the inflammation is reduced, he’ll resume workouts. He should return in 15-21 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None likely.

Casey Kotchman (1B, MIA)
Injury: Strained left oblique.
DL date: June 9
Estimated DL time: The standard down time is roughly four weeks, based on a look at injury spreadsheets. If his ailment is not as severe, we could see him back in three weeks or so.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None.

Jedd Gyorko (2B, SD)
Injury: Strained right groin.
DL date: June 10
Estimated DL time: Without knowing the severity of the strain, it is its difficult to project how long he’ll be out of action. Expect 15-21 days on the DL at this point.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown at this time.

Aaron Hicks (OF, MIN)
Injury: Strained left hamstring.
DL date: June 10
Estimated DL time: 15-21 days is an early estimate.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: His base running may be curtailed.

Matt Reynolds (LHP, ARI)
Injury: Partially torn ulnar collateral ligament.
DL date: June 10
Estimated DL time: While it is possible he can avoid Tommy John surgery, it is unlikely. Still, he will try rest and rehab before deciding on surgery.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown at this time.

David DeJesus (OF, CHN)

Injury: Sprained right shoulder.

DL date: June 15

Estimated DL time: Unknown. He has too much swelling right now to determine if he has a grade 1 or 2 sprain. He could miss 3-6 weeks based on early information.

Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown.

Alex Cobb (RHP, TB)

Injury: Concussion. Struck in the head with a line drive.

DL date: June 16

Estimated DL time: He is likely to miss two starts, slightly more than the 7-day concussion DL minimum. Hopefully he does not have any lingering effects that would extend his DL time.

Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown because every pitcher hit by a batted ball recovers and responds differently.

Ryan Braun (OF, MIL)

Injury: Sprained right thumb. The short rest of five days did not heal his sore and swollen thumb. No word on how much ligament damage he is dealing with.

DL date: June 10

Estimated DL time: A minimum of 15-18 days. He won’t swing a bat for a week, hoping that helps the swelling and soreness subside. It's not out of the question that he might need surgery, which could cost him most of the rest of the season.

Estimated 2013 effect upon return: His power numbers are likely to suffer even if he’s back in 15 days or so.

Jonathan Broxton (RHP, CIN)

Injury: Swelling – right elbow. The MRI probably revealed enough damage that the Reds knew he would miss the rest of June at the minimum.

DL date: June 14

Estimated DL time: Look for the Reds to keep him on the DL into early July, perhaps through the All-Star break.

Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown at this time.

Rehab Updates:

Jose Reyes (SS, TOR)
Injury:  Severely sprained left ankle.
Rehab update and ETA: He has begun his rehab assignment in Single-A Dunedin. One veteran Jays’ observer indicates his range is still limited in the field due to the ankle. He could need around two more weeks before he is ready. How quickly his lateral movement returns to the level before his injury will determine when he’ll return. Right now that looks to be somewhere during the last week of June.
