Dr. HQ: April 29, 2013

Todd Helton (1B, COL)
Injury: Inflammation, left forearm
DL date: April 20
Estimated DL time: Approximately three weeks. When you are 39 years old and play baseball in what looks like Alaska this month, it's hard to overcome ailments quickly. This muscle injury should not be a long-term issue.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected.

Jason Heyward (OF, ATL)
Injury: Appendicitis/appendectomy
DL date: April 21
Estimated DL time: Pro athletes are coming back from this medical procedure quicker than ever. It is not out of the question he can return in 21-28 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Other than some minor stamina issues early on, it won’t impact his production.

Justin Maxwell (OF, HOU)
Injury: Fractured (fifth metacarpal) left hand
DL date: April 24
Estimated DL time: Luckily he didn’t need surgery, so a return in 28-35 days is possible.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Early on, he may have some minor hand weakness that makes gripping a bat more of an effort that he's used to.

Octavio Dotel (RHP, DET)
Injury: Inflammation, right elbow. Considering how many pitches he has thrown in the bullpen—let alone in games—it’s a wonder his elbow has held up this long.
DL date: April 20
Estimated DL time: Three to four weeks. It depends how quickly the swelling goes down and they avoid a repeat once he resumes throwing. Inflammation usually suggests there is a bone spur or debris in the joint. It is possible he avoids surgery until after the season.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return:

Franklin Gutierrez (OF, SEA)
Injury: Grade one (right) hamstring strain
DL date: April 23
Estimated DL time: If it is a true grade one strain, he should return in 15-17 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Matt Adams (1B, STL)
Injury: Strained right oblique
DL date: April 22
Estimated DL time: Approximately four weeks, though his does not appear to be as serious as the typical oblique strain.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Minimal to none.

Didi Gregorius (SS, ARI)
Injury: Concussion
DL date: April 27
Estimated DL time: He isn’t expected to miss more than 7-10 days total.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None.

Gavin Floyd (RHP, CHW)
Injury: Strained flexor mass, right arm. The MRI done on his right elbow reportedly came back clean without any issue with the ligament.
DL date: April 28
Estimated DL time: He should be able to return somewhere between 15-21 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: If healthy when he returns he shouldn’t have any issues.

Lou Marson (C, CLE)
Injury: Sore shoulder. If this ailment is related to the sore neck problem that landed him on the DL earlier in April, then Marson likely has a more serious problem.
DL date: April 25
Estimated DL time: Unknown until what the exact cause of his shoulder and neck pain is.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Unknown.

Manny Parra (LHP, CIN)
Injury: Strained (left) pectoral muscle
DL date: April 24
Estimated DL time: If he doesn’t have a tear of the tendon, Parra should return in about three weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: Other than a slight dip in velocity, he should be close to 100%.

Stephen Fife (RHP, LA)
Injury: Bursitis, right shoulder
DL date: April 22
Estimated DL time: Once the medication and treatment calms down the inflammation he should bounce back quickly. Right now that looks to be between 17-21 days.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None

Francisco Cervelli (C, NYY)
Injury: Fractured right hand. Surgery is needed because the fracture is displaced (not in alignment).
DL date: April 27
Estimated DL time: Close to eight weeks because of the nature of the fracture and surgery.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None other than maybe his throwing accuracy when he first returns.

Ivan Nova (RHP, NYY)
Injury: Strained right triceps
DL date: April 27
Estimated DL time: This ailment is not as serious as first thought. He could return in just under three weeks.
Estimated 2013 effect upon return: None expected.

Rehab Updates:

Brian McCann (C, ATL)
Injury: Labrum surgery
Rehab update and ETA: A sore right wrist kept him from starting his rehab assignment earlier. Caught his first game on April 26. Because he missed spring training, he could use up to 10 to 14 days in the minors to test his right shoulder and build up the strength.

Delmon Young (OF, PHI)
Injury: Surgery, right ankle
Rehab update and ETA: He is clearly struggling in the field and he does not look comfortable running either. He appears to be roughly two weeks away from being ready.
