BATTERS: Spring hitters wrap-up 2017, NL

Let's continue our early look at each team's projected Opening Day lineups and relevant spring training news to identify guys whose stocks have changed during the spring.

As a reminder, our PT Today and PT Tomorrow columns will provide closer looks at these battles as they evolve.

Here is an overview of projected hitting rosters in the National League. You can find the same information about the American League here.

Spring Training Notes

  • Ronald Acuna (CF, ATL) is one of the best OF prospects in the game and looked the part this spring, posting an .832 OPS and solid 3/5 BB/K in 27 AB. At age 19, he's probably a couple of years away from getting an MLB look, but don't let that stop you from investing in him in keeper leagues.

Spring Training Notes

  • Derek Dietrich (2B, MIA) entered 2016 with some good end-game appeal but didn't provide much value. His early returns this spring have been very good (.946 OPS in 42 AB). Even more impressive are the 11 BB he has collected in those 42 AB. He's a good MI stash in deep NL-only leagues.

Spring Training Notes

  • Michael Conforto (LF, NYM) has received more AB this spring than any other NYM bat and has made the most of those opportunities (.986 OPS in 53 AB). Before you invest heavily in him though, note that he has a rough 2/14 BB/K, so he might still be a year away from a true breakout.
  • Wilmer Flores (1B/3B, NYM) still doesn't have a regular role in the NYM lineup, making him available late in many drafts (405 ADP). That said, few bench bats have more upside than Flores does, and he has shown both power (.457 Slg) and plate control (5/8 BB/K) in 46 AB this spring. At age 25, Flores could take a big step forward this season if he can stay healthy.
  • Yoenis Cespedes (LF, NYM) has put it all together this spring, showing tons of power (.733 Slg) while pairing it with elite plate control (6/6 BB/K in 45 AB). Don't assume that Cespedes has reached his ceiling already.

Spring Training Notes

  • Aaron Altherr (RF, PHI) flashed his power/speed potential this spring (3 HR, 2 SB in 54 AB). While he still has holes in his swing (12 K in 54 AB), his batting eye wasn't horrible. Altherr has some post-hype age-26 upside.
  • Rhys Hoskins (1B, PHI) is a very good Plan B behind breakout target Tommy Joseph (1B, PHI). He hit for a lot of power in Double-A in 2016, and his bat looked MLB-ready in a very tiny spring sample (1.181 OPS, 6/3 BB/K in 18 AB).

Spring Training Notes

  • Michael Taylor (CF, WAS) is trying to hang on to relevancy as a toolsy prospect. On the surface, he has had a very big spring (1.000 OPS, 6 SB in 42 AB). But his same warts remain. He has a horrible 0/11 BB/K in those 42 AB.

Spring Training Notes

  • Albert Almora (CF, CHC) has looked like CHC's best bet to stick as their regular CF this year. He'll likely begin the season in a platoon, but if his early spring results are any indication, he could carve out a full-time role: 3 HR, 12 RBI, .934 OPS in 55 AB. Problem is, he has opened up his swing quite a bit to produce that power (1/12 BB/K in 55 AB), so he has more work to do.
  • Ian Happ (2B, CHC) and Eloy Jimenez (RF, CHC) both are top prospects who flashed that upside this spring. Happ posted a 1.285 OPS and 5/14 BB/K in 48 AB, while Jimenez managed a .962 OPS and 2/5 BB/K in 28 AB.

Spring Training Notes

  • Scott Schebler (RF, CIN) is second only to Votto in walks among CIN bats this spring (10 BB in 44 AB). And he has paired it with good power (.511 Slg). Schebler has some darkhorse breakout potential.
  • Tony Renda (2B, CIN) is a former high draft pick who quietly has had a nice March (.927 OPS, 7/5 BB/K, 2 SB in 44 AB). He could have surprising value as a utility guy or as a 2B if Peraza gets injured.

Spring Training Notes

  • Jesus Aguilar (1B, MIL) has produced one of the best springs of any hitter this March (1.352 OPS, 7/11 BB/K in 52 AB). Eric Thames (1B, MIL) has shown a lot of holes in his swing so far this spring (17 K in 45 AB) and little power (.356 Slg), so if his transition back to MLB pitching doesn't go well, Aguilar could work himself into the MIL 1B mix.

Spring Training Notes

  • Adam Frazier (LF, PIT) is a good end-game speed speculation given his good wheels. And he has put up a an excellent 6/4 BB/K in 51 AB this spring, along with a very good .588 Slg. He could be an effective utility speculation in very deep leagues.
  • Alen Hanson (2B, PIT) is a post-hype prospect that has shown excellent contact (3/5 BB/K in 43 AB) and good speed (3 SB), albeit with a poor 50% SB% rate. Still, at age 24 Hanson is a good growth stock.

Spring Training Notes

  • Kolten Wong (2B, STL) likely will remain in a timeshare in the STL lineup. While he hasn't done a lot this spring (.484 OPS, 4/10 BB/K in 47 AB), his skill rejuvenation in the 2H of 2016 makes him an excellent MI buy-low target.
  • Jose Martinez (LF, STL) has carved out a bench role after his huge spring (1.256 OPS, 10/5 BB/K in 45 AB). While he hasn't shown that much power in the minors, he does own a good batting eye at multiple stops, so he could be worth a look as a fifth OF in deep NL-only leagues.

Spring Training Notes

  • Dustin Garneau (C, COL) probably will open the season as COL's backup catcher after the injury to Murphy. Garneau has shown good pitch recognition and decent power in the minors, and he has been one of COL's best bats this spring (1.226 OPS, 1.20 Eye in 29 AB). He could be worth a look as your second catcher in very deep NL-only leagues.

Spring Training Notes

  • Chris Taylor (3B, LA) came up in the SEA system with 7B potential as a starting 2B/SS. That upside never materialized. But it has come out this spring (1.104 OPS in 40 AB), and he also has shown elite plate control (10 BB). It's most likely a small-sample aberration, but he does have some post-hype upside in his age-26 season.

Spring Training Notes

  • Hunter Renfroe (RF, SD) has gotten some buzz as a rookie who could make a big impact in 2017. Just note that he struggled to make consistent contact in the minors, and his batting eye has been very bad this spring too (1/11 BB/K in 66 AB).
  • Jabari Blash (RF, SD) doesn't have the upside of guys like Renfroe or Margot, but he has shown quite a bit of power this spring (6 HR in 49 AB), albeit with plenty of strikeouts too (22 K). If Margot or Renfroe need more seasoning in the minors, Blash is a guy that could get an extended look in the SD OF.

Spring Training Notes

  • Jarrett Parker (LF, SF) carries good profit potential at his current 525 ADP. He has a solid .888 OPS in 54 AB. He also has drawn 9 BB. The key for him will be to cut down on his strikeouts and generate more loft in his swing. Without those adjustments, he'll remain nothing more than a fifth OF type of guy.
