Spring Training Notes

  • Joey Rickard (RF, BAL) is enjoying one of the best springs of any bat in MLB (1.162 OPS, 2.17 Eye in 40 AB). In 2016, Rickard struggled to hit righties and didn't reach base enough to make use of his speed. If his spring batting eye sticks, his wheels could make him a double-digit SB guy in a reserve OF role.
  • Trey Mancini (DH, BAL) turned into one of BAL's better prospects after a very good 2015. He took a step back in 2016, but he has shown some good power this March (.990 OPS in 51 AB).
  • Chance Cisco (C, BAL) is a top catching prospect whose time in BAL likely will come in 2017. His bat showed good promise in a small sample this spring (1.035 OPS in 20 AB).

Spring Training Notes

  • Marco Hernandez (2B, BOS) has been one of the best hitters in BOS camp (1.162 OPS, 6/11 BB/K in 51 AB). Given his groundball stroke, we can't expect the power to stick. But he did post a 115 Spd with BOS in 2016, so he's another guy who could provide some steals if he can carve out a utility role.
  • Pablo Sandoval (3B, BOS) has showed up to camp in great shape and has hit very well (1.052 OPS in 51 AB). However, keep in mind that he has hacked his way to that production (1/11 BB/K in 51 AB), so his hot start isn't likely to carry over into the season.

Spring Training Notes

  • Didi Gregorius (SS, NYY) is expected to be out until mid-May due to a strained shoulder. His replacement could be Tyler Wade (SS, NYY), a young infield prospect who draws walks and has good speed but struggles to make consistent contact.
  • Greg Bird (1B, NYY) has looked like a middle-of-the-order bat so far in the spring (1.639 OPS, 0.89 Eye in 45 AB). Given his elite 203 xPX in 2015, he's a legit 30+ HR threat if he can continue to improve his contact rate.

Spring Training Notes

  • Tim Beckham (SS, TAM) has combined power (.535 Slg) and patience (6 BB in 43 AB) this spring. And he's one of the few bats in the AL projected to have a 125+ PX and 125+ Spd. As a former first-overall pick, Beckham is a late-bloomer with significant profit potential at his current 607 ADP.
  • Casey Gillaspie (1B, TAM) is a former first-round pick who showed glimpses of that upside this spring (3 HR, 4/9 BB/K in 40 AB). He's TAM's 1B of the future and stands a good shot at getting an MLB opportunity early in 2017.
  • Jake Bauers (RF, TAM) is one of the best prospects in the TAM system. He showed it this spring before his demotion (1.322 OPS, 7/4 BB/K in 35 AB). He's a premium investment in keeper leagues and one that could make an impact in the TAM lineup in the second half.
  • Derek Norris (C, TAM) is a recent TAM signee who should get a look as their full-time catcher. He struggled last season with injuries. If healthy, he's still got sneaky 20+ HR upside.

Spring Training Notes

  • Justin Smoak (1B, TOR) typically posts big numbers in spring training, but that hasn't been the case in 2017. He has managed only a .250 Slg in 40 AB. Prospect Rowdy Tellez (1B, TOR) could push him for the 1B job during the season.
  • Steve Pearce (1B, TOR) is one of the best bench targets in the game given his power skills, solid plate control, and ability to play the IF and OF.
  • Richard Urena (SS, TOR) is another good prospect, and he fared well in limited action this spring (.753 OPS in 25 AB).

Spring Training Notes

  • Cody Asche (LF, CHW) has done his part to win a bench job with CHW this spring (1.233 OPS, 0.63 Eye in 38 AB). Keep in mind that he showed some intriguing power in the 1H of 2016 too (134 xPX). He could have some value as a bench guy in very deep AL-only leagues.
  • Yoan Moncada (3B, CHW) flashed his upside this March (1.074 OPS, 5/14 BB/K in 41 AB). Expect him to get a long look in the CHW lineup in 2017.

Spring Training Notes

  • With Jason Kipnis (2B, CLE) expected to miss significant time early in the season, guys like Giovanny Urshela (3b, CLE) and Erik Gonzalez (SS, CLE) could get some immediate time in the CLE infield. But the guy to target is Yandy Diaz (3B, CLE), who demonstrated his top-flight batting eye (7/4 BB/K in 33 AB) with some power and speed this spring. He's an underrated utility prospect who could provide early value in 2017.
  • Austin Jackson (CF, CLE) barely is being drafted even as a fifth OF (627 ADP). While he produced well this spring (1.083 OPS in 24 AB), he didn't draw a walk, so we can't put a lot of stock into it. Still, he's young enough to get his career on track and his ability to play all three OF positions bodes well for his chances to get more AB than it may seem.

Spring Training Notes

  • With J.D. Martinez (RF, DET) expected to miss time in the DET OF, that leaves two spots prime for the taking, along with CF. Steven Moya (RF, DET) has the most upside of the bench OF group, but his inability to make consistent contact and shaky defense make him a liability.
  • JaCoby Jones (CF, DET) has a chance to stick as DET's CF, as does Mikie Mahtook (CF, DET), but both have big holes in their swings that will make it hard for their legs to produce value.

Spring Training Notes

  • Whit Merrifield (2B, KC) could provide some sneaky steals in 2017. He posted a 128 Spd with KC in 2016, and in a small sample size this spring (50 AB), he has featured good plate control (5/5 K/BB) and wheels (5 SB).
  • Hunter Dozier (RF, KC) is one of KC's better hitting prospects. He had a nice rebound year in 2016 and carried that over into the spring (1.300 OPS, 4/5 BB/K in 22 AB).
  • Peter O'Brien (LF, KC) has a big-time power ceiling, and it has been on full display in March (1.194 OPS in 48 AB). But the huge holes in his swing have remained as well (18 K in 48 AB), so he's unlikely to be able to sustain his power over the long haul.

Spring Training Notes

  • Byron Buxton (CF, MIN) showed flashes of his top-prospect upside late in 2016. He has continued to perform at a high level this spring (.860 OPS in 38 AB) and has made decent contact (7 K in 38 AB).
  • Kennys Vargas (1B, MIN) could get another look at DH if Byung-Ho Park (DH/1B, MIN) doesn't improve from 2016. Vargas looked like a middle-order bat in mid-2016 and has a good power ceiling in his age-26 season.

Spring Training Notes

  • Three young bats in the HOU system had big springs. One was A.J. Reed (1B, HOU), who put up a 1.111 OPS and 9/10 BB/K in 36 AB. He remains a 1B power prospect worth following. Another was Colin Moran (3B, HOU), a former first-round pick who flashed that upside this spring (1.050 OPS, 4/7 BB/K in 36 AB). A third was OF prospect Derek Fisher (CF, HOU), who ran wild on the basepaths (10 SB in 34 AB) and reached base at a high clip (.405 OBP).

Spring Training Notes

  • Renato Nunez (DH, OAK) could work himself into the OAK mix at 3B/1B/DH/LF during the season. He had a 1.091 OPS in 18 AB this spring and owns good power from the minors. The key for him is making more consistent contact.
  • Matt Chapman (3B, OAK) is another CI prospect that made a good impression in March (.848 OPS, 6/15 BB/K in 40 AB).

Spring Training Notes

  • Mike Zunino (C, SEA) got his career back on track in 2016, showing flashes of the power potential that made him a first-round pick a few years ago. He has built on those gains this spring (1.384 OPS in 31 AB) and has shown a keen batting eye (11 BB in 31 AB).
  • Mitch Haniger (CF, SEA) has cemented a regular early season look in the SEA lineup after his big spring. If he can continue to make decent contact, he has a power/speed package that could make him a 20/20 threat in 2017.
  • Dan Vogelbach (1B, SEA) did not have a great spring (.646 OPS) as he struggled to make contact (19 K in 57 AB). Still, he's the long-term solution for SEA at 1B and he has a track record of better plate control. Don't write him off.
  • Guillermo Heredia (LF, SEA) didn't show any power or speed in his MLB debut in 2016 after defecting from Cuba. While he hasn't shown power this spring either, he has paired an excellent batting eye (5/7 BB/K in 55 AB) with good speed (3 SB in 55 AB). He could be worth a bench stash in very deep AL-only leagues.

Spring Training Notes
  • Delino DeShields Jr. (CF, TEX) has been written off in many leagues (ADP 515), but at age 24, he still has some untapped upside. It has come out so far this spring (10/12 BB/K, 9 SB in 49 AB). With his ability to draw walks and his speedy legs, DeShields Jr. could carve out a nice utility role in the TEX lineup. He's a premium end-game speed speculation.
  • James Loney (1B, TEX) is battling for a bench job with TEX this spring. So far, the results have not been good (.485 OPS, 3/8 BB/K in 46 AB).
  • Carlos Gomez (CF, TEX) could have a big year in Arlington if he can stay healthy. He has produced a lot of pop this spring (1.170 OPS in 32 AB), albeit with bad plate coverage (2/12 BB/K in 32 AB).
