Up until last week, the theme for this major league season was the oblique injury, with a record setting number of this type of injury already having occurred. We get a reprieve if only for a week or so but I’m sure there are better ways to take our minds off these pesky side injuries. This week three high profile players battle elbow issues and all three eventually could be Tommy John candidates.

When I began covering injuries back in 1993, Tommy John surgery was not nearly as successful as it is now. Torn labrums, flexor mass injuries, modified Mumford surgery, microfracture knee surgery and others were rarely reported because they either didn’t exist or the journalist reporting on the injury did not report true name for various reasons. And oblique injuries? Very, very rare.

The Phillies are having trouble scoring runs so the biggest burden has fallen on the pitchers, especially the starters. One of the keys is the starting depth Vance Worley provides the Phillies. He is projected to be a key cog in the Phillies plans as they wait for Utley and Howard to return. Is his elbow soreness something his owners should be worried about? Also, a look at Scott Rolen and David Robertson of the Yankees.
