PT Today

Shoulder soreness will reportedly land Ryan Zimmerman (3B, WAS) on the 15-day DL Saturday, with WAS recalling Bryce Harper (OF, WAS) from Triple-A Syracuse. Zimmerman has been sidelined since April 21, and is seeing a specialist for further examination and treatment. No timetable is yet set for his return. Chad Tracy (3B/1B, WAS), Steve Lombardozzi (IF, WAS) and Mark DeRosa (3B/OF, WAS) are likely to continue sharing 3B PT in Zimmerman's absence.

Lance Lynn (RHP, STL) has an ERA of 1.33 with 24 Ks and 6 BBs through his first four starts. Over that same period of time, he has thrown PQS 5-4-4-5. This has eased the loss of Chris Carpenter (RHP, STL) to injury and so far validated management's decision not to acquire Roy Oswalt (RHP). Do Lynn's skills support his torrid start, and how secure is his spot in the STL rotation?

Tim Hudson (RHP, ATL) was solid in his final rehab start at AAA Gwinnett on Tuesday, and he is scheduled to join the Atlanta rotation on Sunday versus the light-hitting Pirates. And in San Francisco, Nate Schierholtz has started 11 of the past 13 games, with the promise of continued playing time on the immediate horizon.

[FREE] After leaving the April 23 game following a collision with the outfield wall, Jason Bay (OF, NYM) has landed on the disabled list with a non-displaced rib fracture. Also, after a fourth straight rough start, Jair Jurrjens (RHP, ATL) was demoted to Triple-A, which means Randall Delgado (RHP, ATL) will remain in the rotation when Tim Hudson returns.

Cliff Lee... Daniel Hudson... Sergio Santos... Greg Holland... What do these pitchers have in common? A little downtime in their immediate future. But who will benefit from their absences?

Marlon Byrd (OF, BOS) was traded to the Red Sox on April 21st for a team ravaged by injuries to their outfield. What can BOS expect from Byrd and who gets the PT left in CHI? Also, Michael Pineda (RHP, NYY) was shut down after just 15 pitches in his first rehab start. What does this mean for the his chances of cracking the rotation this season with Andy Pettitte (LHP, NYY) close to returning.?

B.J. Upton (OF, TAM) returned to action Friday, activated from the DL following a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment. Upton has been sidelined with back soreness resulting from a mid-March Grapefruit League OF collision with teammate Desmond Jennings. It is unclear whether Upton's running game, a significant component of his value, will be limited by the injury.

Juan Cruz (RHP, PIT) saved consecutive games on Tuesday and Wednesday as the Pirates took two out of three games from the Diamondbacks. With closer Joel Hanrahan (RHP, PIT) out for a second game with a tight right hamstring, Cruz stepped in and fired his sixth straight scoreless outing to begin the season.

Mark Melancon (RHP, BOS) lived a nightmare against the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night, allowing a walk, a double, and three home runs without recording an out. For the season, Melancon has now allowed 11 ER in only two innings, for a 49.50 ERA. He has taken two losses and was removed from the set-up role in the season's first week. Melancon has options remaining, and on Wednesday he was sent to AAA-Pawtucket in an effort to let him straighten out his mechanics and clear his head. How does his demotion affect the Red Sox pen?

After spending Opening Day on the bench, Juan Pierre (OF, PHI) has since started five of the six games in which the Phillies have faced a right-handed starting pitcher. Just two years ago, Pierre swiped 68 bases and had an SBO of 43%, though those numbers dipped dramatically last year. He was successful on just 27 of his 44 stolen base attempts (61%), and had a 27% SBO. It's unrealistic to expect a full rebound for Pierre, now 34 years old, but he could still be a strong speed source, and has already stolen two bases this year.
